Piano Lessons & Music Consulting

CRAFTING AND FOSTERING CREATIVE LIVES

Peter Schroeder - Piano Instructor/Consultant - for Music, Musicians, Film and TV, Video Games, Performance, and Production.

Peter is a non-traditional piano instructor with over 30 years of experience in piano performance and music instruction. For 18 years, he taught private in-home piano lessons to 31 students a week in West Vancouver and North Vancouver. His students showed an eagerness to practice and learn music as part of their 5-strand program at Collingwood and Mulgrave Private Schools in West Vancouver. Others achieved their musical goals and were accepted into top performance bands, for example, the prestigious TD Canada Jazz Festival bands and the local school performance bands, later going on to complete their degree in music and become professional performers in their own right. His studio is now open for in-studio piano and music lessons in Deep Cove. He holds five and a half years of post-secondary education in music, a coaching certification, and continues to mentor and influence students of all ages, locally and abroad.

"I teach the music the student wants to learn" on piano, guitar, and vocals, and through music production, Peters' clients go from 0 to 100, as fast as possible, while learning proper technique, confidence, and skill building. Peter also offers artist development classes where the focus is on songwriting, theory, stage presence, production, trends and marketing.

Peter is a non-traditional piano instructor... While Classical is a style of music that Peter respects, plays, and teaches at a high level, he prioritizes the music that motivates the student. YouTube hits, Pop, Jazz, Rock, funk, Hip Hop, Latin, Worship, Folk and Classical are genres his clients request to learn daily.

Crafting and Fostering Creative Lives

Overview

INTRODUCTION

You have to love music... this is the motivation pushing artists that find themselves rising to the heights of radio play, hit making, and for some... stardom. Being a star is not for everyone, but the principle is universal: you have to love music, and you also must live it. "Living music" is as simple as making it a priority, which can mean making reasonable sacrifices to keep your aspirations alive. Another good way to "live it" is to invest in your musical craft and yourself by continuing to learn new skills, share, and showcase your talent. This equips you with the skills necessary to make your musical visions a reality at any stage

My multidisciplinary experience, combined with valued professional connections, enables me to clear up the seemingly confusing areas of the music business. I am passionate about music education and instruction, artist development, and music production. I feel privileged to also be a Film and television Agent with Rising Star Management. This has allowed me to provide musicians with rare opportunities to use their skills in valuable professional ways, while helping them make their dreams become a reality.

Simply tell me what you would like to do - I will guide you on your journey toward meeting and exceeding your goals.

About Me

I have been providing effective private and group music instruction on Vancouver's North Shore since 2006, and I have taught music for twenty-three years. I am a contemporary (non-traditional) music instructor equipping students with fundamental and specialized music skills with a focus on Popular, Worship, Jazz, Latin, and Classical Music (if that is what they choose). In an effort to promote a natural motivation and a student’s best efforts, I teach music styles and genres that have context in their life; I also encourage performance, songwriting, singing and teach students how to accompany themselves while they sing (on piano and guitar).

Since it is important musically, I encourage and teach music theory and mentor students in their performance skills as they progress. I am invested in each student, fostering a valuable and lasting relationship. I have seen this musical mentorship profit students musically as well as personally in life skills such as confidence, etiquette, active listening, independence, positive attitude, and focus. In addition to connecting with the student, I believe it is important to connect with the parents. As I get to know you, I align myself with your goals and priorities; I then bring your sensibilities to the lessons, resulting in instruction that meets your objectives.

My education includes:

  • Private piano instruction since the age of five.

  • The Royal Conservatory of Music, Alberta College - with Instructor Mrs. Helen Buick - Concert Pianist (and prodigy) of Canada's own Jean Paul Savilla.

  • Five and a half years of post-secondary education - music and piano performance, as well as pedagogy and sound engineering.

  • Studying voice and voice instruction with Angela Kelman (Lead Singer for Canada’s Juno Award Winning group, “Farmer’s Daughter”, and Author of "The 5 Point Singing System").

  • NCCP-trained Coach.

  • Trained in Music for Young Children, Kindermusic, and Bumble Bee music with Irene Tam, a global award-winning children's music educator.

  • Songwriting (MusicBC)

  • Music licensing (Nat Jay)

  • Orchestration (Screen Composers Guild of Canada)

Artist Development

Artist Development lessons – open to all ages and levels

What is artist development?

Being a connective artist/musician requires skills that at first glance seem natural to performers. In actuality, it takes commitment and dedicated practice combined with genuine talent to craft high level performing skills.

Artist development sessions focus on these must-have skills:

  • learning your instrument(s)

  • vocal coaching

  • originality, trends, and musical style

  • song writing

  • arranging

  • timing - i.e. playing with a “click’ or metronome

  • stage presence

  • mic technique

  • the how-tos of studio recording

  • audio and video recording - EPK/Demo

  • music videos

  • Effective Social Media - YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, SoundCloud, Reverb Nation, Blog

  • Website creation

  • navigating the music business… and much more

Can all this be done in Artist Development sessions? – Yes!

Among my music students are eager to learn recording artists, performers, educators, instrumentalists, and songwriters. I have helped many students realize and exceed their musical goals and consistently reach new heights in their musical status. One of them has worked with Jocb Collier, another records with chart-topping Canadian artists for over $100/h, she's 12 years old. one song writer was a runner up in Canada's CBC Star search, adn one of my multi instrumentalist studnets teaches music at a high level. The best thing about artist development sessions (after the education portion) is that I am equipped with a portable recording studio and cinema quality video and still camera capable of providing professional recordings, recorded in-studio or your environment. Artist Development sessions fast-track you on your journey to being the best artist/musician you can be.

I look forward to speaking with you soon. Thank you very much.

Pop/Rock Band Camp is available-on location (in your home) upon request.

In-Home Band Camp is an experience of a lifetime.

"Our son participated in a week-long Rock Band Camp and loved it! He was just 9 years old at the time and only a beginner with the drums. The transformation we saw in him at week’s end was phenomenal. Not only did he consolidate his basic skills as a drummer, but he also learned that being in a band requires practice, compromise and collaboration. The experience gave him context for the individual instruments and taught him how they all work together to achieve a common goal. Our son is looking forward to participating in the Rock Band Camp again and now practices daily with a keen sense that he has an important part in the band—it seems that not wanting to let your band mates down is a powerful motivator!” -Kelly Linn

Simply invite 4 to 9 band members (trusted friends and/or relatives) to join you (or your child) for five days of the most amazing band experience ever, or...

be brave, being your whole “Family” (adults included) for band camp. Band together and “pop/rock it out” learning, playing, and singing your favorite tunes. Show the kids that you can do it too. Being a band member is a rewarding and fun way to inspire listening, communication, stimulate creativity, and improve connection and musicianship.

More about the camp:

  • Band Camp is conveniently held in your home

  • You choose the week and time of Band Camp that best suits your schedule.

  • Band camp classes run for five consecutive days (Typically Monday-Friday)

  • Classes go for four hours a day (including a 40-minute lunch/band discussion).

  • Lunch is provided by the host, or bag lunches can be arranged.

  • Students typically learn 4 songs and write an original song.

  • A final concert is held for guests-(by invite only), family, and friends in the evening of the last day. The concert will showcase the songs the band choses and learns together.

  • Ideally… Band members will each experience playing piano, drums, bass, percussion, guitar, and singing in a real band format, or grow on their chosen instruments.

  • Before the final concert, band posters will be made, which include the Band's name, catch phrase, and a band photo (taken during the week).

  • The band camp includes charts/sheet music, a professional sound system at the concert, pencils, erasers, binders, band posters, and a band photo

  • The final concert will be recorded and include laser lights.

Band members are encouraged to bring their own instrument(s) (when applicable). If necessary, additional (non-core) instruments/rental fees may be applicable (to be discussed during booking).

It is recommended that each band member bring a snack and a water bottle to Band camp.

Fees and Policies:

  • Registration is $540 each band member.

Each In-Home Summer Pop/Rock Band Camp is unique. Please call or email me anytime to discuss booking or for more information. Hosting is easy, and band camp is immeasurably rewarding.

"Harry had a wonderful experience last summer – great fun and he learned a lot. Peter is a first rate teacher and we were very impressed with what the kids learned in one short week – as evidenced by their final performance. Harry has been inspired to learn the bass guitar as a direct result of his band camp adventure, and he can’t wait for this year’s camp." - Amanda Farrell

Congratulations Lily!!

Guitarist, pianist, and vocalist Lily Tremblay left Vancouver this morning to attend University in Montreal. Lily was 9 years old when she began piano lessons. After several years of playing piano styles including classical, jazz, and pop, Lily decided to begin guitar lessons. Complimenting her busy school and growing social life, Lily quickly found opportunities to perform publicly. She began playing at open mics, fundraisers, private parties, and concerts. For the past few years, Lily's has invested her lesson time in developing covers of her favourite songs. In 2014, she recorded her first music video - a cover of Imagine Dragons' - Radioactive. Lily has been writing a new chapter in her life. My first self-proclaimed "Forever student" (as Lily put it) assures me that she will be using her musical skills to contribute to the Montreal music scene. I look forward to the great things that she will accomplish and to the amazing person that she continues to be.
